NEXTITE SP901 Polyolefin Primer

NEXTITE SP901 is a surface primer for making polyolefins and other low surface energy surfaces suitable for bonding with NEXTITE Instant Adhesives. It is suitable to prime the notoriously difficult to bond surfaces such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as well as thermoplastic rubber materials. NEXTITE SP 901 works well with all of our instant adhesives especially the faster fixture time ones.

Product Overview

NEXTITE SP901 Polyolefin Primer is a sprayable surface activation primer designed to promote strong adhesion on difficult to bond low surface energy plastics and thermoplastic rubber materials. Materials such as polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resist most adhesives without prior surface treatment. SP901 modifies the plastics surface to allow the adhesive to properly wet out and form a durable bond.

NEXTITE SP901 can be applied by spraying, brushing or dipping low surface energy substrates, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications. By spraying the primer, it allows for fast, consistent coverage with minimal waste, making SP901 ideal for high volume production environments as well as limited use.

Applications and Uses

NEXTITE SP901 has been designed as a primer for polyolefins and other low surface energy substrates. It is ideal for industries and tasks that require bonding of at least one difficult to bond surface such as Polyolefins (Polypropylene and Polyethylene), Silicone, Fluoropolymers (PTFE, FEP, PFA, ETFE) and Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE).

NEXTITE SP901 is not recommended to be used on:

• Easier to bond substrates as bond strength can reduce.
• Polyamides (Nylons)
• Where a high peel strength is required.

Instructions for use

1.     Ensure all bonding surfaces are clean and free of grease, oil and contaminants. Clean using NEXTITE PROPREP Surface Preparation Cleaner and allow surfaces to dry completely.

2.     Apply NEXTITE SP901 Polyolefin Primer by spraying, brushing or dipping. Apply a thin, even coat and avoid using excessive primer.

3.     Allow the primer to dry fully before bonding, typically 1-2 minutes.

4.     Use the primer only on polyolefins or other difficult to bond substrates such as Polypropylene, Polyethylene and PTFE. Application on easily bonded materials is unnecessary and may reduce bond performance.

5.     For best results use a fast fixturing NEXTITE Instant Adhesive such as NEXTITE 501 and NEXTITE 506, although all NEXTITE Instant Adhesives are compatible.

6.     Bond the substrates within 10 minutes of applying the primer, bonding straight away after the primer has dried will yield better results.

7.     Press the substates together firmly for a minimum of 30 seconds or follow the recommended fixture time of the selected instant adhesive.

8.     Allow 24 hours for adhesive to fully cure.

Shelf Life and Storage

NEXTITE SP901 has a 24 Month Shelf Life when stored correctly.

Store in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight, an enclosed cabinet is recommended, to extend the shelf life of this product. Keep the open container tightly closed do not leave open.
