What is EPDM Rubber?
EPDM Rubber, short for ethylene propylene diene monomer, is a highly durable synthetic elastomer engineered for outstanding resistance to weathering, ozone, UV radiation and extreme temperatures.Â
EPDM Rubber is widely used across industrial, construction, automotive and roofing applications due to its exceptional outdoor performance and long service life. It offers excellent flexibility, strong tear resistance and reliable compression set properties, making it ideal for seals, gaskets, roofing membranes, pond liners and weather stripping.
Unlike many other rubbers, EPDM performs exceptionally well in continuous outdoor exposure. It maintains flexibility in both high heat and freezing conditions and resists cracking caused by ozone and sunlight. However, it has limited resistance to petroleum-based oil and fuels. EPDM is difficult to bond and requires the use of specialised industrial adhesives to bond effectively.
What adhesives can bond EPDM rubber?
EPDM Rubber bonds extremely well with Instant Adhesives due to their ability to rapidly polymerise on contact with the rubber surface and create high strength bonds with minimal clamping in a matter of seconds.
For EPDM Rubber: NEXTITE 506 is the preferred option. Its high purity, low viscosity formulation ensures fast and consistent curing. The next best choice is NEXTITE 501 which is a medium viscosity version of NEXTITE 506 which offers more control.
For EPDM Rubber Sponge: NEXTITE 501 is the preferred option as it will not absorb into the porous surface. This allows for good contact of adhesive between both pieces.
Other NEXTITE Instant Adhesives grades can also bond EPDM like our rubber toughened and low odour/ low bloom variants. However, for highest overall strength on EPDM, NEXTITE 506 (preferred) and NEXTITE 501 are the best options.
For larger surface areas, an EPDM specific contact adhesive provides a practical and economical alternative. These are well suited to sheet bonding, rubber lining and broad area laminations where flexibility is required and near immediate handling strength is beneficial.

They generally offer lower structural strength compared to instant adhesives or structural systems, particularly in high load or peel stress applications. Proper application technique is critical, as incorrect flash off time or uneven coating can significantly reduce final bond strength. |

Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is critical to achieving a strong and reliable bond when working with EPDM rubber. Begin by lightly wiping the bonding area with Isopropyl Alcohol. This removes surface contaminants including dust, oils, mould release agents and residual adhesive that can interfere with bond strength. Allow the cleaner to fully evaporate before applying any adhesive.Â
