Product Overview

NEXTITE AB406 is a toughened structural two-part acrylic-based adhesive engineered specifically for bonding difficult to bond low surface energy plastics like polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), PTFE, and PVDF. With a 10:1 mix ratio and a working time of 3 to 5 minutes, this adhesive delivers strong, structural bonds at room temperature without the need for primers or special surface treatments, making it a faster, more efficient solution for challenging substrates.

Developed as a polyolefin bonder, NEXTITE AB406 creates high-performance, permanent bonds where other adhesives struggle. Once cured, it offers excellent resistance to water, humidity, and chemicals (especially automotive chemicals). This makes it ideal for industrial, automotive, and assembly applications where long-term durability is essential. It also features a low exothermic reaction during bonding, which reduces the risk of material distortion.

NEXTITE AB406 bonds both similar and dissimilar materials, including plastics, metals, and composites, even with minimal surface preparation. This can significantly reduce labour time and production costs while improving bond consistency and part aesthetics. It is also an ideal alternative to mechanical fasteners, rivets, solvent welding, or plastic welding.

NEXTITE AB206 or NEXTITE AB406?

Both NEXTITE AB206 and AB406 are designed for bonding difficult plastics, including polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), without requiring a separate primer. The main difference is their balance of strength and toughness.

NEXTITE AB206 High Strength Polyolefin Bonder is suited to applications where high bond strength is the priority, making it a good choice for rigid components and general assembly. While not the primary use it can also be used to help seal cracks in polyethylene tanks as it cures hard and expands whilst curing.

NEXTITE AB406 High Toughness Polyolefin Bonder is designed for applications where greater toughness and resistance to impact are important. It is a suitable choice for assemblies exposed to knocks, vibration or mechanical stress.

Which should you choose? Choose AB206 when prioritising bond strength, or AB406 when the bonded assembly needs to better withstand impact and mechanical stress. Consider the materials, joint design and service conditions when selecting the most suitable adhesive.

Applications and Uses

NEXTITE AB406 bonds to a variety of substrates they include but aren’t limited to:

  • Low Surface Energy Plastics: Polypropylene (PP) Polyethylene (PE – LDPE/ HDPE), PTFE (Teflon), PVDF.
  • Plastics: Acrylic (PMMA), Polycarbonate (PC), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
  • Metals: Aluminium, Steel, Stainless Steel, Powder Coated Surfaces
  • Composites: Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP), Carbon Fibre (CF)
  • Other: Glass, Concrete, Wood, MDF, Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE)

NEXTITE AB206 will not adhere to Nylons or Silicone surfaces.

Some applications of NEXTITE AB406 include

  • Engineering Plastic Fabrication
  • Replacing the need for hardware, rivets or welding in production
  • Many cases where PP or PE need to be bonded to themselves or other materials
  • Repairing PP/PE Parts
  • Automotive Part Repair or Fixture

Versatility of NEXTITE AB406

While bond strength is important, it’s not the only factor to consider when selecting an adhesive. Once fully cured, NEXTITE AB406 delivers a range of additional benefits that can make a real difference depending on your application.

  • Great Chemical Resistance – Ethylene Glycol, Brake Fluid, Power Steering Fluid, Iso-Pentane
  • High resistance to weathering and humid environments
  • Can be used in indoor and outdoor applications
  • Waterproofing when applied correctly
  • Good Temperature resistance -40 to 80°C

Tools and Accessories

NEXTITE AB406 requires the use of a compatible dual cartridge dispensing applicator and static mixer nozzles, sold separately. The 50mL, 250mL and 490mL Cartridges use standard 10:1 Ratio dual cartridge dispensing applicators and static mixers. It is important to use the correct applicator and mixer for each cartridge size, as 10:1 ratio systems are not compatible with other ratios cartridges and accessories. Each cartridge type requires the matching dispensing applicator and static mixer designed specifically for its ratio.

Instructions for use

  1. Use a static mixer nozzle to accurately mix the contents of the 10:1 cartridge. Each cartridge includes one Static Mixer Nozzle Orange 10:1, and you can purchase more in 5, 10 and 50 packs from our store.
  2. You will also require a 10:1 Static Mixing Dispenser to push the contents through the static mixer. This is the best way to apply it and get accurate, dependable results every time.
  3. Parts to be joined should fit without forcing and be clean, it is recommended to use NEXTITE PROPREP prior to applying any product to remove any oils, dust and dirt. It is important to let out any air bubbles and ensure adhesive is fully mixed by dispensing the first part of the cartridge onto some paper. This is to make sure the two separate parts are fully mixed and is generally the first 2-3mL. Apply adhesive directly from the static mixer.
  4. Press parts together in firm contact and use a clamp to secure while the glue reacts. NEXTITE AB406 will achieve a working strength within 90-240 min and full cure strength within 24 hours. You have approximately 3-5 minutes to work with the glue before it starts to set off.

Please check the TDS for material suitability and strength of each bond. For a tutorial how to use please refer to our YouTube Chanel.
